As we started with the project, we wanted to reflect the clients’ deep interest in the Japanese lifestyle, the ikigai philosophy. While designing, we combined the Japanese style’s minimalism and harmony with the Scandinavian style’s simplicity and functionality. A restrained colour palette and subtle but intricate patterns are used throughout the space helping to evoke the serene characteristics of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. This fusion was thoughtfully adapted to suit our tropical climate, ensuring the design is culturally resonant and practical.

When we enter the apartment the large open living space is divided into different spaces by carefully placing the furniture to define various functionalities. Particularly notable is the dining space, where we’ve integrated traditional seating with Japanese-style seating. This combination provides both comfort and versatility, accommodating various dining preferences and enhancing the space’s functionality.

The open and fluid environment is continued to the master bedroom with a linear placement of wardrobe, dressing and study with low-height bedding. This has created a balance to make the space look larger. We also prioritized maximizing storage solutions throughout the design. Thoughtfully designed storage spaces helped us maintain the minimalist aesthetic while ensuring that the home remains organized and clutter-free. Warm-toned wood is used on the headboard wall with patterns enhancing the visual appeal. The minimalist/uncluttered approach is taken into the Kitchen too. The warm patterns can be on the cabinetry connecting the kitchen to the dining area.

We also emphasized the use of light wood, which is central to both design principles. The use of natural materials has not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also created a connection with the natural environment, creating a soothing and harmonious living space.

‘Iki’ means ‘Life’, and ‘Kai’ means ‘Result’. Ikigai is “a motivating force; something or someone that gives a person a sense of purpose or a reason for living”. This home creates an efficient space focusing on essential functions, creating a space of true fulfilment.
